Roosters star James Tedesco has criticised former teammate Latrell Mitchell as Joseph Manu shared an update on his condition from hospital.

Manu was clobbered by Mitchell with a vicious high shot on Friday night, and as a result he needed to go to hospital to receive medical treatment. The incident has all but rendered Mitchell's season over, facing a minimum six-week and maximum nine-week ban.

Tedesco spoke about the incident on Sunday a day after Many underwent facial reconstruction surgery in Brisbane to fix a depressed fracture of his cheekbone.

"[Latrell] said he didn't mean it, it was an accident," Tedesco said.

"Latrell wouldn't do it on purpose but its forceful contact to the head and whether its accidental or not, it causes someone a fair amount of bones in his face... it must be pretty forceful to the head.

"You just can't do that.

"Fire and passion is what makes him such a great player but you don't want to be breaking people's faces."

Tedesco said Manu spoke to Tedesco from hospital and said though he was "pretty banged up", he was okay.

On his Instagram account on Sunday Manu thanked "everyone for all the support & kind messages. I'm in good spirits and recovering well."
