New South Wales fast bowler Sean Abbott has put his hand up for a Test debut following a stellar outing against Victoria in a Sheffield Shield clash.

Abbott took 6-38 as Victoria finished with just 199 on day one at Drummoyne Oval.

The 29-year-old claimed the crucial wicket of Nic Maddinson, whose score of 87 saved Victoria from a catastrophic low total.

Abbott, who's represented Australia in the ODI format on two occasions, also dismissed former Australian Test star Peter Handscomb, as well as Test opener Marcus Harris.

Australia's dynamic bowling attack of Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc will be first-choice selections for the upcoming Ashes series against England.

But Abbott's figures today will give selectors something to think about.
