New York offensive lineman Nick Gates has suffered an horrific broken leg during the first quarter of the Giants' match against Washington.

With around six minutes remaining in the quarter, Gates was blocking when his leg appeared to become trapped under Washington's Daron Payne.

He immediately began writhing in agony on the ground, as play was stopped.

His leg was placed in an air cast as he was taken from the field. The club later confirmed a "lower leg fracture."

The 25-year-old, who joined New York in 2018, was able to wave to the crowd as he was taken from the field.

"Going to be a hell of a comeback!"

His agent, Jonathan Perzley, said Gates was already plotting a comeback.

"Not a tougher dude on the planet than Gates," he wrote on Instagram.

"He laughed on the phone and said, 'I snapped that sh-t in half.

"He will be back. It would take a lot more than a broken bone to stop that man."
