The most contentious part of budget negotiations in Broward this year were between the nine Democratic county commissioners and Republican Sheriff Al Lamberti.
But last month both sides appeared to be working toward a compromise that includes about $21 million in cuts for BSO — about half what county officials had sought. The rhetoric on both sides had quieted down — until recent days when emails from Republican activists started circulating.
Republicans are urging taxpayers to show up at tomorrow's 5 p.m. budget hearing at County Hall to support Lamberti and fight the budget cuts. Lamberti has been making the rounds this summer to speak about his budget to any group that is interested — most recently that included the Broward Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and the Broward GOP's club president's council.
But the sheriff's voice may not be heard tomorrow: a BSO spokesman said he isn't certain if Lamberti will attend.
