Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz's office courteously notified the media last week that she would be meeting behind closed doors this morning with "local leaders in the healthcare community."
The press release was marked "for planning purposes only,'' a term typically used by the White House to alert reporters to the president's schedule and protect his security. The Weston Democrat would be available to answer questions from the media following the event.
In other words, the congresswoman's office wanted to keep the meeting quiet to mute any outcry from non-invited constituents and healthcare reform protesters - already steamed over her decision to hold a town hall meeting over the phone one week ago. But at the same time, Wasserman Schultz wanted to make sure the media was there to publicize her soundbites after the meeting.
In case any reporters missed that opportunity, they're invited to a conference call with Wasserman Schultz and "Cancer Schmancer'' founder/actress Fran Drescher – both cancer survivors who will "dispel GOP myths on health insurance reform and the urgent need for reform." Yet another carefully orchestrated event by the Democratic congresswoman trying to help the president regain the momentum in the healthcare debate.
