An election in Broward and Palm Beach counties ends in a virtual tie, triggering a likely recount. Sound familiar?

The difference this time is, no one can blame the Democrats. This too-close-to-call race is the Republican primary in Congressional District 19 (the seat vacated by Democrat Robert Wexler). Ed Lynch led Joe Budd by 37 votes out of more than 8,000 votes cast in the race which includes parts of Palm Beach and Broward counties. The GOP nominee will face state Sen. Ted Deutch in a district that performs well for Democratic candidates.

Florida law requires an automatic machine recount if two candidates are separated by less than one-half of 1 percent.

Secretary of State Kurt Browning said Wednesday that the Elections Canvassing Commission may have to hold a special meeting to order the recount. The two counties' election supervisors have until noon on Friday to report preliminary results to the state, and the margin separating Lynch and Budd could be altered, depending on how many provisional ballots were cast.
