It's Mel Martinez's time for a closed door confab with President Barack Obama's choice for the U.S. Supreme Court, Sonia Sotomayor. Martinez is scheduled to meet Tuesday with the high court nominee who has been making the rounds in the Senate to garner support for her nomination.

The Florida Republican is one of several GOP senators Hispanic groups are hoping to convince to back Sotomayor.

Martinez's office highlighted the remarks he gave the day Sotomayor was nominated: "When it comes to judicial candidates, we ought to look at experience, fairness, impartiality, temperament, and knowledge of the law. I look forward to participating in a fair and thorough process as the Senate conducts its constitutionally-required examination of Judge Sotomayor’s qualifications for serving
on the nation’s highest court.”

New Jersey Democrat Bob Menendez met today with Sotomayor and said (not surprisingly) he's ready to enthusiastically embrace her nomination. He also blasted the criticism aimed at Sotomayor, saying he's heard the "most appalling language" used for describing Sotomayor, including talk show host Glenn Beck calling her a "Latina chick."

"I would just say look where it comes from," he said. "It is demeaning to have those voices speak about someone who is so eminently qualified in the ways in which they have."
