The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee met in Miami this weekend to plot the party's way back to a fillibuster-proof majority in the wake of losing the Massachusetts Senate seat.
"Clearly everyone believes there was a wake-up call in Massachusetts, though I don't think Democrats and Republicans see it the same way.'' said Democratic fundraiser Michael Adler. "It certainly was the
mid-year election before the mid-year election.''
Alder said about 13 Democratic senators attended the meeting, as well as the frontrunning Democrat for Florida's open seat, U.S. Rep. Kendrick Meek of Miami. Although polls show Meek running behind both the major Republican candidates, Adler said confidence in Meek is growing.
"Kendrick has matured as a candidate, as an elected official and really took a leadership role in Haiti,'' Adler said. "His profile has improved dramatically in the state and with supporters around the country…He's much more credible than I expected him to be at this time. Just look at the money he's raised.''
Meek said last week that he has collected $4.5 million, with $3.3 million left in the bank.
