If the name Alan Mendelsohn is toxic in state political circles these days, perhaps Senate candidate Jim Norman is feeling the sting.
Norman, the longtime Hillsborough county commissioner who Senate leaders have embraced over longtime Rep. Kevin Ambler, is the only candidate for the 2010 general election to have reported so far receiving a contribution ($500) from Mendelsohn, directly, himself. That's according to the latest information in the Divison of Elections online database.
The donation came in June 2008, by which time federal authorities were well into their investigation of Mendelsohn's money-raising and dealings with PACS that led to his recent indictment.
A few other candidates received donations indirectly, through Mendelsohn's PAC, Ophthalmology PAC, according to the Division of Elections. They are: Reps. Esteban Bovo, Franklin Sands and Rene Garcia; and Sens. Ronda Storms, Mike Haridopolos,and Steve Oelrich. Norman also got $500 through the PAC, as did Senate candidate and former House Rep. Jack Latvala.
