Miami Mayor Manny Diaz – who was passed over for potential high-level appointments in the Obama administration – got some recognition from Washington recently when Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano tapped him for a 16-member advisory council.

Diaz, who was born in Cuba, sounded an immigrant-friendly note in joining a department known for illegal immigrant raids.

"I look forward to working with Secretary Napolitano and other members of the council to find solutions to keep our country safe while welcoming immigrants who will contribute to our nation's interests,'' Diaz said in a written statement.

Diaz, whose term as president of the U.S. Conference of Mayors ends this weekend, is the only mayor on the Homeland Security Advisory Council. More about the advisory council here.
