Miramar City Commissioner Barbara Sharief filed to run for Broward County Commission Thursday. Sharief is seeking the seat being vacated by Diana Wasserman-Rubin who is retiring and remains under investigation by the Broward State Attorney's Office for business dealings related to her husband's grant writing work.

Sharief, who is a black Democrat, is a viable contender in a district that is almost evently split between whites, blacks and Hispanics. Shevrin Jones, who is also black and son of West Park mayor Eric Jones, is also running on the Democratic side. Pembroke Pines City Commissioner Iris Siple, who is white, said earlier this week she is thinking about running.

Two Republicans are running: Southwest Ranches Town Council Member Steve Breitkreuz and Christopher Max Ziadie, a Toys R Us store manager.

Qualifying is next month which leaves time for others to jump into the race.
