We briefly got Mel Martinez on the phone just as he got off a plane and he told us that there's no impending crisis in his resignation. He just feels he's done all that he can in the Senate.
Asked if he thinks he is letting down voters who supported him by stepping down early, particularly with mammoth issues like healthcare reform getting underway, he said: "The governor is not going to appoint someone vastly different from my record."
Asked if Crist should appoint himself, he said that would be unlikely. "He wants the people of Florida to make that decision. Certainly it would be good in terms of seniority but I leave that to him. It's a decision for the governor to make."
