A group of self-described leaders of the Puerto Rican community are trying to raise money for Democratic U.S. Rep. Kendrick Meek's Senate campaign by emphasizing his support for Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor. The leading Republican Senate candidate, Gov. Charlie Crist, has said he opposes her confirmation.

"We remain troubled that Governor Crist went to great lengths to avoid weighing in on this nomination of a mainstream jurist certain to be confirmed by Democratic, Republican and Independent senators, only to then forcefully oppose Sotomayor by relying on flimsy argumentation and questioning her commitment to the Constitution,'' says the e-mail from .the group, which includes Meek's campaign consultant, Ana Cruz and other Democrats. "The confirmation of the President's nominee to the Supreme Court is one of the most solemn obligations a U.S. Senator takes in his or her lifetime, and we feel let down by Governor Crist, a candidate for this high office."

The group notes that Republican Sen. Mel Martinez said he supports Sotomayor. But Crist is increasingly gaining political cover from other Republican senators, with former presidential nominee John McCain saying yesterday that he will vote no.
