The House has passed a billion-dollar bill that Democrats say will mean $555 million to keep 9,200 education
jobs in Florida.
"With this $555 million boost to our schools and students, we will make sure education professionals stay in the classrooms, teaching our students, ensuring that our children get the finest quality education," said Rep. Kathy Castor.
The bill also means Medicaid dollars for the state; Gov. Charlie Crist wrote to the Florida Congressional delegation Monday, urging support for the legislation. Castor said the state is expected to receive just under $800 million. Crist applauded the vote, saying he was "confident these additional resources will help ensure the health of men, women and children, as well as the vitality of the Sunshine State students.”
The bill passed 247 to 161 along party lines. Republicans charged the bill is a payback to teachers' union and that the government can't afford it. President Barack Obama is expected to sign the bill into law.
