Rep. Alcee L. Hastings has joined Rep. Jerrold Nadler as an original co-sponsor of the Respect for Marriage Act of 2009 which would repeal the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act, ensuring that all married couples would be "treated equally under federal law.
"The Defense of Marriage Act is unconstitutional, unconscionable, and illogical," Hastings said. "Gay Americans are active in their communities, raise families, and pay taxes just like everyone else. All those who assume the serious legal responsibilities of marriage should be afforded equal rights and protection under the law."
