In the most competitive Broward County race between two Democrats, County Commissioner Sue Gunzburger and former state legislator Steve Geller raked in similar amounts this past fundraising quarter.
Gunzburger raised about $22,000, bring her campaign total to about $230,000. She has about $190,000 unspent.
Geller's campaign finance report for direct campaign contributions wasn't posted by Monday evening but he said it shows that he raised $17,540 — plus he reported about $8,500 to his committee Floridians for a Stronger Tomorrow. That puts his campaign at about $90,000 and his committee at about $206,000 — but some of his committee money has been spent on other races in recent years. Geller has about $160,000 unspent in his campaign and committee combined.
Both reported returning contributions from or linked to Scott Rothstein, the disbarred attorney facing life in prison for a Ponzi scheme, to Herbert Stettin, the trustee untangling the mess in bankruptcy court. Rothstein gave $50,000 to Geller's committee and he returned it Dec. 31 after going to court to sort out how to return it. Gunzburger returned about $7,000 in donations from Rothstein, his wife and law firm attorneys in early November.
Geller has picked up the bulk of the union endorsements so far including the grand prize: the AFL-CIO. But can he pull off a rare feat and oust a sitting county commissioner?
