Retired state sen. Steve Geller took one day to decide whether to jump county commission races and decided against it. Geller says he is sticking to his plan to challenge Commissioner Sue Gunzburger even though Commissioner Diana Wasserman-Rubin announced she is retiring, creating a rare open seat.

"I have been deeply committed to Hallandale, Hollywood and Pembroke Pines,'' Geller said. "I have been campaigning there a year and a half. I am intimiately familiar with that district."

Geller represented that portion of Broward while a state legislator but currently lives out of the district in Cooper City. He said he plans to soon rent a residence in Hollywood.

This seat leans Democratic so Geller's announcement clears the field for the only Democratic candidate so far: Pembroke Pines City Commissioner Angelo Castillo
