Florida Dems say they've got the voter registration momentum in the South Florida district being vacated by Mario Diaz-Balart, but GOP'ers say they're eager for a rematch.
"If the Democrats think they can pick up this seat, we hope they sink lots of their money into it, just like they did in 2008 when we beat them by 6 points in the best environment they’re ever going to see," said Katie Gordon Betta, a spokeswoman for the Republican Party of Florida.
That grudge match between Diaz-Balart and Democrat Joe Garcia drew national attention — and millions from both parties — as a referendum on whether the district's Cuban American voters were beginning to favor something other than a hard line approach to Cuba.
