Miami Mayor Manny Diaz's term as president of the U.S. Conference of the Mayors ended this weekend on a sour note, with the Obama administration cancelling plans to attend the annual event because of union protests in the host city of Providence.

Vice President Joe Biden and other top administration officials were expected to play a major role in the conference but pulled out because of Obama's policy of not crossing picket lines. In a speech distributed by his office, Diaz called the decision not to show up a "terrible mistake" and said it set a "very dangerous precedent."
