The Democratic race for attorney general's getting a little more intriguing now that Sen. Dave Aronberg skipped the Regulated Industries Committee meeting yesterday because "I will be detained by events in my district that I need to attend," according to his please-excuse-my-absence note.
One of those "events:" A fundraiser for the Attorney General's race.
Without Aronberg (as well as Sen. Charlie Dean and Sen. Ted Deutch), Reg Industries couldn't meet.
It's not against Senate rules to fundraise during a special session as long as the fundraiser was already scheduled before the session was called. But Aronberg's fellow Democrat and opponent in the AG's race, Dan Gelber, doesn't care.
"As Attorney General, I want to abide by the spirit of campaign finance laws, not exploit their loopholes," Gelber said.
This isn't the only Aronberg's fundraising issue that could become a factor in the race for the state's top law enforcement job. He received big fundraising help from accused Palm Beach Gardens scammer and ex-con Jeffrey R. Gibson (More here). And his political committee, Citizens for Political Accountability, received a $50,000 check from Alan Mendelsohn, accused of campaign finance irregularities and fraud in a federal case. Aronberg has yet to say what Mendelsohn wanted for all that cash.
