Dania Beach Mayor Al Jones has applied to replace suspended County Commissioner Josephus Eggelletion who represented an overwhelmingly black and Democratic district. Jones will likely get a close look from Gov. Charlie Crist: he is an African-American and Republican who worked as a dean in the school district in the past.

Also, Jones temporarily filled in on the Broward School Board for a few months in 2006.

One strike against him: Dania Beach is not in Eggelletion's district which spans Fort Lauderdale to Pompano Beach. Crist's office has said someone doesn't need to live in the district to fill an interim appointment.

Other applicants for the county seat include Lauderhill City Commissioner Margaret Bates and former Lauderdale Lakes City Commissioner John Billingsley — both are black Democrats.

Crist will also appoint someone to replace School Board Member Beverly Gallagher. Recent applications received for that seat include from former Broward County Republican Chair and attorney Kevin Tynan, pharmicist Carmen Zaldivar and Cheryl Krause who owns an internet health care products company.
