Former state Senate Republican leader Dan Webster, who briefly ran in 2004 for the U.S. Senate seat Mel Martinez won and is now leaving, said Gov. Charlie Crist is all but guaranteed to be the next U.S. Senator, so he may as well get in office early in order for him to gain seniority in the tradition-bound upper chamber of Congress.
"Everything in the U.S. Senate is based on seniority. This could be huge for Florida with Charlie Crist already being there. It would be good for the state," Webster said. "I think Mel would agree with me, but the governor probably won’t appoint himself for appearance sake."
Asked if he’d take an appointment to fill out the rest of Martinez’s term, Webster paused.
"I would think about it. It would be pretty neat. Even to be there for a year would be pretty cool," Webster said.
The advantage of Webster: He's a rock-ribbed conservative (helps Crist in the primary), he's widely respected even among liberals, he has a demonstrated track record as a statesman.
