Gov. Charlie Crist, who has taken flak from his U.S. Senate rivals for failing to take a position on Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor, parted ways with the senator he hopes to succeed and said today that he opposed the judge's confirmation.

U.S. Sen. Mel Martinez, whose retirement in 2010 paved the way for Crist's Senate bid, said last week that he would vote in favor of Sotomayor.

Crist's statement says: "Judge Sotomayor is worthy of respect for her many accomplishments and her remarkable story of success. However, I have strong concerns that Judge Sotomayor would not strictly and objectively construe the constitution and lacks respect for the fundamental right to keep and bear arms.  For these reasons, I cannot support her appointment to the highest court in the land."

Crist's position puts him on the same side as Republican rival Marco Rubio but at odds with Democratic frontrunner Kendrick Meek.
