Rep. Corrine Brown says she plans to form an exploratory committee for Mel Martinez's Senate seat — setting up a potential Democratic primary with Rep. Kendrick Meek.
The Jacksonville Democrat — who, along with Meek, is one of three black members of Congress from Florida – says she recently commissioned a poll, and the results were "very favorable," with herself leading the "Democratic field."
She says the poll shows that "without having spent a single moment campaigning, Corrine Brown jumps to the head of the field." She said the poll pitted her against Meek, Rep. Ron Klein, Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio and state Sen. Dan Gelber, (who said Saturday he's "stepping back" from the race) and that she "rockets to a first place tie with Congressman Meek, despite the fact that Rep. Meek has been campaigning openly for the Senate for nearly half a year."
"I'm proud of my record fighting – and delivering – for Florida families and I believe that record stands out among all of the candidates," she said in a press release. "I have helped create tens of thousands of jobs, brought your tax dollars back home to Florida, worked to improve education by hiring more teachers and reducing class sizes, protected our seniors' Social Security and Medicare at every turn, and passed the largest increase in veterans' health care in American history. I believe my record of not just talking change, but delivering real change for Florida families is what best prepares me to represent Florida
families in the Senate."
She says she'd "relish a Senate race against the likely Republican nominee, Gov. Charlie Crist. "These are challenging times for Florida," she said. "Our economy is in a shambles and our families are hurting. Charlie Crist may be good at taking pictures and making promises, but what has he actually accomplished?"
