Resident rabblerouser Javier Manjarres said the Broward Republican Party's request that people RSVP to see Gov. Charlie Crist speak at its meeting on Monday is an effort to intimidate supporters (like himself) of former House Speaker Marco Rubio.
"It's a scare tactic,'' said Manjarres, who said he plans to organize a "pro-Rubio, not anti-Crist'' rally before the meeting. "They're trying to close a public meeting.''
Absolutely not, said Broward Republican Party Chairman Chip LaMarca. He said RSVPs were suggested, not required, to make sure they can accommodate a potentially large turnout.
"It's going to be an open meeting people,'' he said. "Anyone who wants to come
hear the governor speak can hear him as long as there's room, and I
don't think there should be a problem."
The leading Republican candidates for Florida's open U.S. Senate seat were invited to address Republican activists in response to mounting pressure from Rubio supporters for the local party to hold a straw poll.
