Miami-Dade county commissioner Katy Sorenson said today she's not planning to challenge Miami Republican Mario Diaz-Balart this fall. The commissioner — who announced last week she won't run for reelection — had been rumored as a potential candidate and said a poll conducted by Democrats suggested a potential Sorenson candidacy was "do-able.
"I considered it and decided this wasn't my time, and I've got another plan," said Sorenson, who last week announced plans to collaborate with the University of Miami to develop a leadership initiative to develop candidates for local and state elected office.
Sorenson didn't close the door on a possible future run, noting that voters in November will be asked to consider a constitutional amendment that would redraw congressional boundaries.
"There may be opportunities in the future," she said. "I'm not ruling anything out."
Some Dems believe Diaz-Balart may be vulnerable, pointing to his miniscule fundraising numbers in the last quarter. Diaz-Balart said last week he's got fundraisers planned and is "feeling good about where we are."
